Creative inspirations … the croissant

At Love At First Bite, many creative ideas related to cakes, pastries and other sweet treats provide inspiration for us. But how much do you know about these sweet treats? We thought it would be interesting to look closely at the creative origins of various cakes and pastries from around the world. We start off with the ever popular croissant…

When you think of the croissant, you probably imagine yourself at a French patisserie (pastry shop), or in a Parisian sidewalk café sipping a cup of hot coffee and biting into this light, flaky and delicious pastry. You silently thank the French for introducing it to the world. Merci beaucoup!

But wait… what if we said the croissant did not originate in France? Gasp!

The croissant actually originated in Vienna, Austria as the kipferl, which dates back to around the 13th century. These kipferl pastries came in a variety of shapes and were made with a different type of dough.

The birth of the croissant as we know it today can be dated to around 1838. At that time, August Zang, an Austrian artillery officer, established a Viennese bakery called “Boulangerie Viennoise” at 92 rue de Richelieu in Paris.

Nowadays, you can savour a croissant practically anywhere of the world. In fact, some famous American fast food chains have even incorporated it into their breakfast menus. The popular egg and cheese croissant sandwich or “croissan’wich” is a true mix of cultures.

Who knows.. perhaps this could be an inspiration for a new cake from Love At First Bite!

What famous cake or pastry would you like to see us feature next?
